For many years Valparaíso or “Valpo” has been the main port of our country, connecting Chile with international trade. Unlike other cities, “The Jewel of the Pacific” or “La Joya del Pacífico” in Spanish, as it is popularly known, was built by English sailors who for many years had control over it. The mixture of cultures, represented by its inhabitants, and its picturesque architecture, are some of the important characteristics of the city. In addition, it is characterized by its bohemia, art, poetry and its beautiful coast.
Sotomayor Square, where the main port of the city is located; “La Sebastiana”, famous house of the poet Pablo Neruda, and the architecture of the city whose traditional urban style is specially adapted with the hills that surround it, made Valparaíso declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003, with the intention to protect their culture, architecture and their unmistakable identity.
